ATS Friendly Resume Template: What Works (and What Quietly Breaks Parsing)

Single-column layout. Two-column resumes look stylish but often get parsed in the wrong reading order—your skills column may merge with your experience text, scrambling meaning. Stick to one column for safety.

Standard section names: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications. ATS parsers are trained to recognize these. Creative names like ‘My Journey’ or ‘What I Bring’ confuse classification.

Plain text bullets, normal hyphens, consistent dates (e.g., ‘Mar 2024 – Present’), and standard fonts (Inter, Helvetica, Arial, Calibri). Save as PDF only when the employer accepts it; some ATS prefer .docx—follow the posting’s instruction.

Avoid icons replacing words. If you use a phone icon instead of the word ‘Phone’ or ‘Email,’ the parser may drop your contact info. Always include the actual word.

Avoid dense tables, embedded images, headers/footers, and text inside graphics. Anything visual that isn’t live, selectable text is a parsing risk.

Avoid keyword stuffing. ATS may tolerate it, but recruiters won’t. Use real keywords where they truthfully describe what you did. Repetition without context reduces credibility.

Header: Name, target role/title, city, email, phone, optional LinkedIn or portfolio. Keep this to 3–4 lines, no graphics.

Summary (2–3 sentences): role anchor + specialty + headline proof point. Skills (one block, grouped by category if helpful). Experience (most recent first; outcome-first bullets with metrics). Projects (if relevant). Education. Certifications/Awards.

Length: 1 page for early/mid-career; 2 pages only if you genuinely need it. Density of evidence matters more than length. Keep margins reasonable (0.6–1 inch) to preserve readability.
